Google the phrase "poetry slam" and read a couple definitions about it.  Then, in your notebook, create your own definition of a poetry slam.

1.  I can understand spoken word poetry's expressive power and develop my creative skills through interactive activities.

2.  I will explore spoken word's elements, techniques, and impact by analyzing examples of spoken word performances.

1.  Class discussion:  What does spoken word mean to you?  What are your thoughts about it?  Have you ever experienced a spoken word performance?  Have you ever performed in a spoken word event? Wanna share?
